I think it is very disgusting to eat a little yoolk from turtle egg. But again that was the only thing he could eat. I wonder if brian still had gut cherries but forgot about them. I would rather go looking for more raspberries than eat six turtle shells if I was in Brian's place!!

I think that it is gross how Brian couldn't stop eating the yolk from a turtle's egg, and actually thought about eating the leathery shell! If I was in the wilderness I would just eat more raspberries. I also don't think that Brian will be found by rescuers until a long time.

I didn't know that the unknown animal was a turtle. Again, I had no idea that we (human) could actually eat turtles, even though there were people eating turtles. But raw eggs is NOT healthy. I wonder why Brian didn't cook it. He had a fire. It was sad for the eggs because the eggs were meat to be hatched. NOT meant to be eaten. I wonder what is going to happen if more people eats turtle eggs. But I am still intrested in eating at least one because Gary Paulsen described the eggs as if they were normal eggs. I am a little intrested in turtles's eggs. I enjoy reading Hatchet. It is a great story.

I think it was gross how Brian ate the eggs and the yolk . Brian had a fire right in front of him plus he might have ate the shell . I like this book so far.

Hi 4th graders,
A few of you commented on why Brian didn't cook the eggs if he did in fact have a fire. How would you suggest Brian cook the eggs using the fire?

one way is that you can burn up a rock with the fire and then put the egg on the rock and then pick it up with a leaf.
Another way is that you shake the egg and make it scramble.

Amanda remember in the book when Brian said he saw his uncle eat them? You actually can eat raw eggs, but it is not always safe to do. The best way to make sure the egg is safe is to cook it much like cooking meat. You can eat it raw, but there are possibilities of getting sick.

I think that brian had bad times at the forest like when he saw the bear and the porcupine. I can't beleve that the unknown object was a turtle i think turtle shells are not helthy for you i agree on that.

I really don't think at all that Brian was worrying about illness at that time; Just food. I can really picture the eggs "Round,size of ping pong balls,17,whit,leathery shells.Gary Paulsen's repitition really helped me imagine how Brian felt.I am really curious about what will happen to Brian after eating the eggs if anything at all.The ending is VERY strong. It makes you want to read more

But we some times eat boiled eggs with the yolk and the white but i think that brian is having a worse experience than we have with chiken eggs.

I agree with you, we do eat boiled eggs, but Brian had nothing to cook the egg so his only option is to eat the eggs raw , all though maybe Brian could crack the egg and put it on the hatchet and put the hatchet over the fire so he could cook the egg .

I really don't get how Brian didn't even care about what he was eating. He didn't even bother about putting it over the fire.He just swallowed the egg whole!

I cant believe Brian ate the egg i would have just looked for more raspberries if I were him. I didn't think it was a turtle because I thought it would be a bigger animal. Brian should have put the egg over the fire so he cooked the egg and it would be much easier to eat. Brian i guess has to eat what he has to eat. Brian is very adventures on what he eats I don't think I would have the gut to eat a turtle egg i'm not that adventures in my foods.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT WAS A TURTLE?????? When he described it it was everything an alligator does. If there are no alligators in a forest what are the chances of there being a snapping turtle.Think about it an alligator has legs on the side they have claws and they splash around in water.

I thought that the animal tracks were made from an alligator. But the animal was a turtle. I espicially was amazed by the reason for the turtle coming to shore. Brian must have been very hungry that he ate 6 TURTLE eggs. And it was RAW. If I was Brian, I would have eaten berries. But that is easy to say. Brian is lost in the Canadian Woods with only a hatchet for tool. It is HIS responsibility to get food. But he is starved to DEATH. I may have been carried away like Brian. So I MIGHT have eaten the egg. BUT, cooked it (if I had the power).

My prediction was COMPLETELY WRONG. I thought that the tracks were a crocodile. But, it was a turtle. And mostly I really HATE eggs. But if I were brian I will try to eat the eggs if it was kind of what I only had to eat. And if I didn't eat the eggs i'll hope for the best.

My prediction was incorrect because I thought that the snapping turtle's footprints were actually an alligator's footprints instead. I also would never eat a raw egg over a raspberry in my life! I would of never guessed that the foot prints were turtle's!
