If you haven't read Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper the students and I will tell you that you are missing out on a phenomenal book.
Also, Sharon Draper will be visiting next month! How often do we get a chance to meet the author of the books we read? We look forward to speaking with Ms. Draper on 3/19/13.

We have begun our new novel study and the students are actively interacting with the text. We are focusing on learning figurative language and developing a deeper understanding of the story including the author's purpose.
We are developing a coding system and will add updates as we see fit. The following are codes we are using as we read:
Op=Onomatopoeia
Ch=Cliffhanger
Fs=Foreshadow
Fb=Flashback
I=Idioms
S=Simile
M=Metaphor
SD2=Sensory Details or Strong Details
CI=Clue for Inference
T-S=Text-to-Self
T-T=Text-to-Text
T-W=Text-to-World

The students and I are truly enjoying our interactive read aloud book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. The students are assigned a chapter to read each night including one on the weekends. Then, I will check for comprehension the following day. It is very important that students do not read ahead. The students also have a comprehension packet that we complete in class. In the event that they do not finish in class it may be completed for homework. Ask your child what C.Q.A.A. stands for as they answer their questions. I am working with them to form complete thoughts when responding.

The students have been working on finding "just right" books. These books are to be read independently and are typically high interest books. Currently, the students use their reading journals to log their pages read, identify/define new words, and practice a reading strategy. We will be working on these in class and for homework when assigned. Here is a great link for how to help your child pick a book that is right for them:

Scholastic has a great tool for helping students find books and to check to see if the book they are reading is at the right level for them.
